So: you love color, but you’re too afraid to dye your hair?
Or you have other things holding you back such as:
- possible allergies,
- a job that won’t allow you to be as creative as you’d like with your hair,
- or you’d just like to experiment with color a bit before committing to anything.
Fam, say no more, we at Buzzcut Guide have the solution for you: best hair chalks.
Here’s a quick selection of our chalks with the current deals on Amazon. You can scroll on to read reviews of each hair chalk and learn how to use them and what to keep in mind.
What is hair chalk?
If you’ve never heard of them, their name is pretty self-explanatory – they’re pigment blocks similar to your old blackboard nemesis (if you’re still old enough to remember those!) that can be used to temporarily lend color to your hair – or any other surface and body parts, if you’re not careful.
Also interesting: read our guide on bleaching hair here.
While hair chalks are pigmented, they don’t really work with any other active ingredients to make the dye stick to your natural hair. This is perfect if you want to try a color for a few hours just to see if you like it. Or you might want to try it for a special occasion, or just for the fun of it.
It’s also a great solution for those with sensitive scalps or allergies. The product contains pastel ink (a type of ink used by artists and which can be similar to chalk but has a very different effect), along with binders, pigments and preservatives.
As always, we recommend you to be careful before applying any product. Do a patch and allergy tests before going ham – but other than that, have fun and enjoy our suggestions for hair chalks. These will give you bright, vibrant coloring that will allow you to best show your inner color lover – even if only for a few hours.

L’Oréal Liquid Chalk
This one is for the ones who want to try a different thing but that want a more mess-free application. While most hair chalks are powder-based, this one is liquid and avoids some of the fall-out that can happen when you rub the block pigment on your hair.
As a brand, L’Oréal needs no introduction as well – it’s a classic present in pretty much everyone’s beauty cabinet, from hair to skincare or make-up. Its L’Oréal Liquid Chalk is also said not to transfer as much, although as it is still a chalk and has a limited lasting power.
This product is also said to not be as pigmented as other options on this list, so if you’re looking for a softer color or your hair is light and you’re afraid of staining it, this is the option for you!

How to use hair chalk?
While the part of “chalk” in hair chalks may make you think you could just go ahead and use any type of chalk, please consider before how you may be damaging your hair. While these offers are a bit more pricey than your average black board utensil, they have been approved for safe use in your hair, and contain better ingredients that will help the color to last and stay bright for a few hours.
Another thing you should keep in mind is that, these being temporary dyes, they will stain your clothes, hands, and anything they come in contact with, especially if you wet them, so be sure to set them properly with hairspray or wax, and be wary of your hair coming close to light colored surfaces or fabrics.
Also, while it’s blondes that will definitely have the most fun out of this, as their hair will show the best and brightest colors, brunettes will still get a great payoff of some of our selections, so don’t let that discourage you, fellow mermaids and unicorns!
